Hagi Sakakura Zenemon Mentori Cup
Sakakura Zenemon’s journey to Hagi pottery was a path of family discovery. A descendent of one of the great pottery families of the region, the family kiln fell into disuse at his grandfather’s generation.
The personal mission that Sakakura set himself was to re-establish his family’s tradition in pottery. This was neither easy or quick, with years spent immersing himself in ceramic arts and constructing his own noborigama (climbing kiln) from scratch. To his task he brought not just a dedication to restart his family’s flame, but a new generation’s perspective to the Hagi style. His work is faithful to Hagi, but original in many respects. Award winning, he is now fully accepted by the ceramics community in Hagi, as a potter worthy of the family name.
These ‘mentori’ cups achieve their effect by hand chisel work onto the surface to create faces (men). Each is individually thrown, and finished in the classic pale shades of Hagi. The ‘kodai’ or base reveals the quality of the red clay used to make them.
Made in Hagi city, Yamaguchi prefecture.
