Uno Hake Travel size Clothes Brush

Tokyo, a modern city larger than any other, has a rich seam of traditional crafts.  Among the many craft industries in the traditional districts of the city that have survived, is brush making.  This could be in the imported craft of western brushes, or the Japanese style of hake (ha-ke) with arranged hairs pressed between slices of wood.

A fixture in Tokyo’s brush making scene is Uno Hake Brush founded in 1917.  In its century of existence the micro-company has reached the point where today its team is a mother and daughter working in the shadow of newly erected Tokyo SkyTree tower.  Despite the change around them, their technique in brush manufacture remains the same.  Threads of animal hair, arranged and hand planted into rows.  Not so much designed as born from craft, the brushes they make connect the planted section of hairs to a separate piece of wood branded with the Uno logo.
Put simply, the hairs of this brush will not come out.

These are travel size clothes brushes, and horse hair from tail and mane is adjusted in softness to fit different fabric types.  For example the brush for cashmere wool uses the soft hair from the mane, while for wool, there is the slightly stiffer hair of the tail.  Each will tidily remove dust or pollen from fabric and other surfaces.

Hand-planted and handmade in Tokyo.
